Book Review: “Gracefull: Growing a Heart that Cares for Our Neighbors” by Dorena Williamson

When I received an email from one of my favorite Christian publishing companies about brand new releases that were now available for review, I immediately jumped to sign up to review this brand new children’s book the moment I read what it was about:

Hope and Anna love seeing each other at church. When a Sunday grace offering is collected to help lift up Anna’s homeless family, Hope begins to ask questions and has a unique opportunity to learn what grace looks like, both for her and for Anna’s immigrant family. This touching story teaches children that God showers grace that is meant to be shared—allowing us all to be GraceFull!

In this follow up to her first two books, ColorFull and ThoughtFull, Dorena Williamson opens a dialogue on the tough subjects of poverty and homelessness and offers children encouragement to show God’s grace and love to others whose home life or homeland might look very different than their own.

Let me tell you, this book did not at all disappoint! Not only was my daughter thrilled by the fact that one of the main characters shared her name (Anna), but our reading it together also led to her asking me quite a few good and important questions like:

“Why does she not have a home?”

“When will she have a home?”

“Will they help her?”

One thing I have already noticed about my daughter, Anna, is that right now at age 4, she has a big heart that delights in caring for and helping others. As her mom, I want to inspire, encourage, support, and cultivate that in her as much as possible, so I am always on the lookout for resources to help me do just that. “Gracefull” has proven to be just such a resource for me, and I could not recommend it more.

If you are looking for a book to come alongside you in a culture wherein immigration, homelessness, and refugees are hot topics and equip you to raise your kids with a Christ-like viewpoint and heart for others, this is the book for you! I have no doubt it will quickly become a family favorite as you read it over and over again.
